Description
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It prevents bacterial growth (bacteriostatic) and is effective against a range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria, Rickettsia, and protozoa.

Dosage

Standard: 100mg twice daily on Day 1, then 100mg once daily.

Lyme disease: 100mg twice daily for 10–21 days.

Malaria prophylaxis: 100mg daily (start 1–2 days before travel until 4 weeks after return).

Anthrax: 100mg twice daily for 60 days.

Children (8+ years, <45kg): 2.2mg/kg twice daily on Day 1, then once daily.
Overdose
Seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Missed Dose
Take as soon as remembered. Skip if near next dose. Do not double dose.
How to Use
Swallow with a full glass of water while sitting or standing. Avoid lying down for 30 minutes. Take on an empty stomach (1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) unless otherwise advised.
When Not to Use

Allergy to doxycycline or tetracyclines.

Pregnancy (2nd/3rd trimester) or breastfeeding.

Severe liver or kidney disease unless supervised.

Use with isotretinoin.
Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, photosensitivity, headache, esophageal irritation.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Use cautiously in liver or kidney impairment. Monitor for fungal infections if used long-term.
Drug Interactions

Antacids, calcium, iron, dairy: reduce absorption.

Oral contraceptives: reduced effect.

Warfarin: increased bleeding risk.

Retinoids: risk of intracranial hypertension.
Food Interactions
Avoid dairy with the dose (take 2 hours apart). Alcohol may reduce effectiveness.
Storage / Disposal
Store at room temperature (20°C–25°C) away from moisture and sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Dispose of as per local guidelines.
