Generic Name

Used For

• Treating acidity and ulcers in the stomach and esophagus.

How It Works

Pantoprazole reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach, helping to relieve acid-related problems such as acid reflux, stomach ulcers, and esophagus inflammation.

Indications

• Duodenal and gastric ulcers.

• Moderate to severe inflammation of the esophagus (reflux esophagitis).

• In combination with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infections and reduce recurrence of ulcers caused by this bacteria.

Dosage

• As prescribed by a doctor. Dose depends on the condition being treated.

Side Effects

Uncommon (up to 1 in 100 people):

• Headache, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bloating, flatulence, constipation, dry mouth, abdominal pain, skin rash, itching, fatigue, sleep disorders, fractures in hip/wrist/spine.

Rare (up to 1 in 1,000 people):

• Distortion or loss of taste, blurred vision, hives, joint or muscle pain, weight changes, fever, swelling of extremities, allergic reactions, depression, breast enlargement in males.

Very Rare:

• Disorientation

Drug Interactions

• Antifungals: Ketoconazole, Itraconazole, Posaconazole

• Cancer drugs: Erlotinib

• Blood thinners: Warfarin, Phenprocoumon

• Others: Atazanavir, Methotrexate, Fluvoxamine, Rifampicin

When Not to Use

• If allergic to pantoprazole or any other proton pump inhibitors.

Precautions

• Inform your doctor if you have severe liver problems or a history of liver disease. Liver enzymes may be monitored regularly.

• Long-term use (over 1 year) may slightly increase the risk of fractures in hip, wrist, or spine.

• Inform your doctor of any previous skin reactions to acid-reducing medicines.

• Stop treatment and consult your doctor if a rash or joint pain develops, especially in sun-exposed areas.
