Description

Zyloric 100mg contains Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. It works by lowering uric acid levels in the blood and urine, preventing urate crystal buildup that can cause gout, kidney stones, and uric acid deposits. By reducing uric acid formation, it helps manage painful flare-ups and long-term complications of hyperuricemia.

Indications

  • Gouty arthritis.

  • Tophi (urate deposits under the skin).

  • Kidney stones due to uric acid.

  • Nephrolithiasis (stones in kidneys/urinary tract).

  • Hyperuricemia caused by cancer therapy or certain medications.

How It Works

Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts hypoxanthine to xanthine and then to uric acid. By blocking this pathway, it lowers uric acid levels in the body and prevents new deposits.

Dosage

  • Dose is individualized by the doctor, depending on uric acid levels and medical condition.

  • Must be taken orally with water, preferably after meals.

  • Treatment may be long-term to prevent recurrence of symptoms.

Side Effects

Uncommon (≤1 in 100):

  • Skin rash, sore lips/mouth.

  • Wheezing, chest tightness, dizziness.

Rare (≤1 in 1000):

  • Fever, muscle aches, flu-like symptoms.

  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions (rash, liver/blood changes).

  • Mouth ulcers, conjunctivitis, blisters or peeling skin.

Seek medical help immediately if severe rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty occurs.

Drug Interactions

Allopurinol may interact with:

  • Immunosuppressants: Azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine, cyclosporin.

  • If you have kidney stones, smaller stones may pass into the urinary tract and cause blockage.

  • Tell your doctor if you are on ACE inhibitors or diuretics for heart disease/BP.

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use only if clearly prescribed by a physician.

  • Always consult your doctor before taking during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Storage

Doctor’s Review

Dr. Ayesha Rahman, Consultant Rheumatologist:
“Zyloric (Allopurinol) is widely used to manage high uric acid levels in gout and related conditions. It is effective in preventing flare-ups, though skin reactions and hypersensitivity are important to watch for. Patients should use it under close medical supervision.”
