How a Childhood Dream Turned Into a Thriving Mental Health Practice
A Dream Rooted in Purpose, some dreams take years to build, and when they finally come to life, the feeling is indescribable. Dr. Rebecca Heron, a psychologist, professor, and the founder of In My Heart Psychology & Counseling, knows that feeling well.
One year later, she and her team are ready to celebrate. The clinic is hosting a Ribbon-Cutting Event on March 28th from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and everyone in the Katy and Greater Houston community is welcome to join.
From a Little Girl’s Dream to a Thriving Practice
Dr. Rebecca’s journey started long before she ever opened a clinic. She grew up adopted in England, raised by a Jamaican family, and spent much of her early life trying to figure out where she fit in. Instead of letting those struggles hold her back, she leaned into them. They made her curious about people, about how we grow, and about what real support looks like.
That curiosity turned into a career that has now spanned over 15 years in mental health. She has worked in psychiatric hospitals, prisons, foster care, community mental health programs, and private practice. Along the way, she also became an associate professor, teaching and mentoring the next generation of clinicians.
Today, she leads a team of over 15 clinicians at In My Heart Psychology & Counseling. Together, they serve children, teens, adults, couples, and families across Katy and Houston every single day.
What In My Heart Psychology & Counseling Offers
The mission behind the clinic is straightforward. They want to help you become the best version of yourself. Here is a closer look at what they bring to the table.
Therapy and Counseling:
The team provides individual therapy, couples counseling, family therapy, and group sessions. Every treatment plan is built around the client’s unique needs and grounded in proven approaches, including:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, commonly known as CBT
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, or DBT
- EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, also called ACT
- Motivational Interviewing
- Person-Centered Counseling
- Solution-Focused Therapy
Whether someone is dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship struggles, or a major life transition, there is a clinician on the team who can help.
Psychological Evaluation:
The clinic also offers comprehensive psychological evaluations for both children and adults. These assessments help identify things like learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and emotional or behavioral challenges. The goal is to give individuals and families real clarity so they know exactly what steps to take next.
Psychiatry Services:
Here is one of the most exciting updates. The clinic will soon begin offering psychiatry services. That means clients can get their assessments done, attend therapy, and manage medication all in one place. No more running between different offices or trying to coordinate between providers who never talk to each other.
Specialized Programs:
In My Heart also runs an 8-week creative expression workshop designed specifically for teen girls. Licensed counselors lead participants through activities involving art, writing, music, movement, and drama. The workshop helps young women build confidence, work through emotions, and develop resilience in a safe and supportive space.
The Ribbon-Cutting Event What to Expect
This event is about so much more than cutting a ribbon. It is an afternoon built around connection, celebration, and community. Here is what you can look forward to:
- Food and refreshments to enjoy while you walk around and meet people
- Live music to keep the energy up and the mood warm
- Raffle prizes with some really exciting giveaways
- A chance to meet the full team of psychologists, counselors, and clinicians
- Networking time for professionals, organizations, and anyone interested in mental health resources
It does not matter if you are already a client, thinking about starting therapy, or just want to see what the clinic is all about. Everyone is welcome.
Why This Milestone Matter
Mental health care is not something people should have to fight to find. Communities like Katy and Greater Houston need accessible, high-quality, and culturally aware services. That is exactly what In My Heart has been delivering for the past year.
Growing to a team of over 15 clinicians in just 12 months says a lot. It tells you the demand is real, and it tells you the care being provided is making a difference. With psychiatry services on the way, the clinic is becoming an even stronger resource for people who need support in more than one area.
Looking at other mental health practices in the Katy and Houston area shows where In My Heart really separates itself.
Mental Health Counseling of Katy
This practice recently held its own ribbon-cutting event through the Katy Chamber of Commerce. They offer counseling for children, adults, families, and couples. That said, their services do not include the same depth of psychological evaluations, and they have not announced plans for integrated psychiatry.
CARE Counseling:
CARE has grown quickly, opening multiple clinic locations with creative launch events. Their focus on accessibility is strong. However, their model does not carry the same personal, founder-driven story or the specialized programming that In My Heart has built from the ground up.
Midwest Wellness Institute:
MWI Health operates across several states and offers a broad range of services, including psychiatry, TMS therapy, and substance abuse treatment. They cover a lot of ground, but they do not have the close-knit, community-rooted feel that makes In My Heart feel like more than just a clinic.
Strengthen Your Mental Health Journey
After reviewing what competitors are missing, here are two steps worth considering before you choose a mental health provider.
Ask About Integrated Care Before You Commit
One of the biggest frustrations people face is fragmented care. You see a therapist at one office and a psychiatrist at another, and the two never communicate. That creates gaps, delays, and confusion.
Before you choose a provider, ask whether they offer everything in one place. In My Heart’s upcoming psychiatry services mean that clients will have a team that actually talks to each other and coordinates treatment together.
Here is why that matters:
- Treatment outcomes tend to improve when providers work as a team
- Clients feel more supported and less overwhelmed
- There are fewer miscommunications and dropped threads in care
- Everything stays under one roof, which saves time and energy
Pay Attention to How a You Feel
Research has shown over and over again that the relationship between a client and their clinician is the single biggest factor in whether therapy works. Skills and credentials matter, but connection matters more.
When you are looking for a provider, pay attention to the small things:
- Do they offer a free consultation so you can get a feel for the fit?
- Does the intake process feel warm, or does it feel like paperwork?
- Does the clinician seem genuinely interested in understanding you as a person?
- Does the space feel safe, welcoming, and free of judgment?
In My Heart was built on the belief that real change starts with a real relationship. That is not a tagline. It is how the team approaches every single session.
