Description
Entamizole DS tablets contain Diloxanide Furoate 500mg and Metronidazole 400mg. Diloxanide Furoate is an anti-amoebic drug effective against Entamoeba histolytica infections in the intestine, while Metronidazole acts as both an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine, targeting bacterial and protozoal infections. Together, this combination works to treat intestinal and systemic amoebiasis effectively, making it a reliable choice for patients suffering from amoebic infections and mixed intestinal disorders.
Ingredients
Diloxanide Furoate 500mg, Metronidazole 400mg
Drug Class
Antiamoebic + Antibacterial + Antiprotozoal
Uses
Entamizole DS is prescribed for intestinal amoebiasis, extraintestinal amoebiasis including amoebic liver abscess, giardiasis, anaerobic bacterial infections linked with amoebiasis, and mixed intestinal infections where broad-spectrum coverage is required.
How To Use
Entamizole DS should be taken orally with a full glass of water, preferably after meals to reduce stomach upset. Dosage and treatment duration must always be followed as prescribed by the doctor, and the full course should be completed even if symptoms improve early.
Side Effects
Patients may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, headache, dizziness, or a metallic taste in the mouth. Dark urine may occur but is harmless and temporary. Rarely, allergic reactions, rash, or liver enzyme changes may be observed. Medical advice is required if severe side effects appear.
Warnings & Precautions
Alcohol must be strictly avoided during treatment and for 48 hours after stopping the medicine, as it can cause severe nausea, cramps, flushing, and vomiting. The drug should be used cautiously in patients with liver disease or kidney impairment. It is not recommended for individuals allergic to metronidazole or diloxanide. Long-term or repeated use may increase the risk of secondary infections.
When Not to Use
This medicine should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to metronidazole, diloxanide, or related compounds. It is contraindicated in severe hepatic impairment without proper dose adjustment and should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Drug Interactions
Entamizole DS may interact with alcohol, anticoagulants such as warfarin (increasing bleeding risk), phenytoin and phenobarbital (reducing metronidazole levels), and cimetidine (which can increase metronidazole concentration).
Storage
Store at room temperature, below 25°C, protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep away from the reach of children.
