Overview
Filatil contains Filgrastim, a man-made form of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). It helps the bone marrow produce more white blood cells (neutrophils), which play a crucial role in fighting infections. This medicine is commonly prescribed to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, individuals undergoing bone marrow transplants, or those with conditions that cause low white blood cell counts (neutropenia). By increasing neutrophil levels, Filatil reduces the risk of infections and related complications.
Uses
Filatil may be prescribed for:
-
Preventing infections in chemotherapy-induced neutropenia.
-
Increasing neutrophil counts after bone marrow or stem cell transplantation.
-
Treating chronic neutropenia (congenital, cyclic, or idiopathic).
-
Mobilizing peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPCs) for collection before transplant.
How to Use
-
Administered as an injection either under the skin (subcutaneous) or into a vein (intravenous).
-
The dose depends on body weight, underlying condition, and treatment response.
-
Should only be administered under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.
-
If used at home, patients must be trained properly in preparation and injection techniques.
-
Do not shake the vial; allow it to reach room temperature before use.
-
Discard any solution that appears discolored or contains particles.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of Filatil may include:
-
Bone pain (most common).
-
Headache.
-
Fatigue or weakness
-
Injection site reactions (redness, pain, or swelling).
-
Nausea.
-
Rare but serious: enlargement of the spleen, shortness of breath, or allergic reactions.
Warnings & Precautions
-
Use only under medical supervision.
-
Patients with sickle cell disease should use cautiously as it may trigger sickle cell crises.
-
Monitoring of white blood cell counts is necessary during treatment.
-
Inform your doctor if you have a history of spleen problems, respiratory conditions, or allergies.
-
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use Filgrastim only if clearly needed and prescribed.
-
Do not reuse syringes, needles, or vials.
Contraindications
Do not use Filatil if you have:
-
Known hypersensitivity to Filgrastim or E. coli–derived proteins.
-
Certain blood cancers (unless prescribed by a hematologist).
Storage
-
Store in a refrigerator (2–8°C); do not freeze.
-
Keep protected from light.
-
Do not shake.
-
Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Doctor’s Review
“Filatil (Filgrastim) is an important supportive therapy for patients with chemotherapy-induced neutropenia or those undergoing bone marrow transplantation. It effectively reduces the risk of severe infections by boosting neutrophil production. Bone pain is a common side effect, but usually manageable. Its administration should always be supervised, with regular blood monitoring to ensure safety.”
