Description

Havrix is a vaccine designed to provide active immunization against hepatitis A virus infection. It contains inactivated hepatitis A virus antigen prepared to stimulate the body’s immune system to produce protective antibodies. This protection helps prevent hepatitis A, a liver infection commonly transmitted through contaminated food or water. The vaccine is administered intramuscularly and is used both for routine immunization and for individuals traveling to or living in regions where hepatitis A is common.

Formula (per dose)

  • Inactivated hepatitis A virus antigen (strain HM175).

  • Aluminum hydroxide (adjuvant).

  • Formaldehyde (trace, used in preparation).

  • Other stabilizers and excipients (trace amounts as per manufacturer’s formulation).

Uses (as per medical practice in Pakistan)

  • Active immunization against hepatitis A virus infection.

  • Protection for children and adults in endemic areas.

  • Recommended for travelers to hepatitis A–risk regions.

  • Preventive use in individuals at occupational risk (e.g., healthcare, food service workers).

Precautions

  • Should only be given under supervision of a qualified healthcare professional.

  • Not to be used in individuals with severe allergic reactions to any vaccine component.

  • Use with caution in individuals with weakened immune systems; antibody response may be reduced.

  • Defer vaccination in patients with moderate or severe acute illness until recovery.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should receive the vaccine only if clearly needed, after risk-benefit evaluation.

Possible Side Effects

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at injection site.

  • Mild fever.

  • Headache or tiredness.

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, or abdominal discomfort.

  • Rare: allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or breathing difficulty.

Contraindications / When Not to Use

  • Known hypersensitivity to any component of Havrix, including aluminum hydroxide or formaldehyde residues.

  • Severe reaction after a previous dose of hepatitis A vaccine.

Drug Interactions

  • Can generally be administered with other vaccines at separate injection sites.

  • Immunosuppressive therapy (e.g., corticosteroids, chemotherapy) may reduce antibody response.

  • No major drug interactions noted, but patient history should always be reviewed.

Storage & Disposal

  • Store in a refrigerator at 2°C–8°C (do not freeze).

  • Protect from light.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Discard if frozen or after expiry date as per pharmaceutical guidelines.

Doctor’s Review – Dr. Faisal Rahman, Consultant Infectious Disease Specialist:
“Havrix is a trusted vaccine for preventing hepatitis A, especially valuable in regions where outbreaks from contaminated food and water are common. It offers strong protection for children, travelers, and patients with chronic liver disease. Side effects are usually mild, such as injection site discomfort or low-grade fever, while severe reactions are rare. Full immunity requires completing the recommended course with booster dosing for long-term protection.”
