Avanep (Nepafenac 0.1%) is an ophthalmic suspension used for the treatment and prevention of eye inflammation and pain, especially following cataract surgery or other ocular procedures. Nepafenac is a prodrug that is converted within the eye to its active form, amfenac, which selectively inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins — the main cause of ocular pain and inflammation.
This makes Avanep highly effective in relieving redness, swelling, pain, and irritation of the eye. It is strictly for topical ophthalmic use only.
Uses
-
Post-operative eye inflammation and pain (especially cataract surgery)
-
Treatment of anterior uveitis (inflammation of the front eye structures)
-
Relief of ocular pain, irritation, and redness
-
May be prescribed for certain allergic conjunctivitis conditions under medical supervision
Dosage
-
Typical dose: 1 drop in the affected eye(s), 2–3 times daily, or as prescribed by the ophthalmologist
-
Start before surgery (if indicated) and continue after procedure as directed
-
Do not self-medicate — always use under eye specialist supervision
How to Use
-
Wash hands thoroughly before application
-
Shake the bottle well
-
Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid, and instill 1 drop into the eye
-
Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface or the eye to avoid contamination
-
Gently close the eye for 1–2 minutes without blinking to enhance absorption
-
If using other eye medications, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applications
In Case of Overdose
-
Accidental ingestion or excessive instillation may cause: nausea, dizziness, severe eye irritation, or blurred vision
-
Seek emergency medical help immediately if overdose is suspected
Missed Dose
-
Instill as soon as remembered
-
Skip if it’s nearly time for next dose — do not double dose

Kidney and liver function tests in long-term therapy or systemic absorption risk
Doctor’s Review
“Nepafenac eye drops are highly effective in controlling post-surgical inflammation and pain, particularly after cataract procedures. They provide targeted relief and reduce recovery time. However, because these are NSAID-based drops, patients must use them strictly under supervision to avoid corneal complications. Self-medication is not advised.”
