Description

Avaxim is an inactivated Hepatitis A vaccine that helps protect against infection caused by the Hepatitis A virus (HAV), which affects the liver and can lead to acute illness. It works by stimulating the body’s immune system to produce antibodies against HAV, offering protection for several years after full vaccination. It is recommended for children, adults, and individuals at risk of exposure to contaminated food, water, or close contact with infected persons.

Primary Uses

  • Provides immunization against Hepatitis A virus

  • Prevents acute Hepatitis A infection and liver inflammation

  • Recommended for travelers to regions with high Hepatitis A prevalence

  • Used in outbreak control and preventive healthcare

Indications

  • Prevention of Hepatitis A infection in both children and adults

  • Particularly recommended for:

    • Children above 18 months

    • Travelers to endemic areas

    • Individuals with chronic liver disease

    • People at risk due to food handling or occupational exposure

Dosage & Administration

  • Children (≥18 months): One injection, followed by a booster 6–18 months later for long-term protection

  • Adults: One injection, with a booster dose after 6–18 months

  • Administered intramuscularly (IM), usually in the deltoid muscle

  • Should be given under supervision of a healthcare professional

In Case of Overdose

  • Vaccine overdose is rare

  • May increase risk of stronger local site reactions or fever

  • Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms worsen

Missed Dose

  • If a booster dose is missed, consult your doctor to reschedule

  • Do not double doses; resume as advised by your healthcare provider

When Not to Use

  • In individuals with severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to any vaccine component

  • In case of acute febrile illness (high fever, active infection)

  • Patients with severe immunosuppression should consult a doctor before use

Side Effects

Common:

  • Injection site pain, redness, swelling

  • Mild fever

  • Fatigue, malaise

  • Nausea, loss of appetite

Rare but serious:

  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of face/tongue)

  • Severe liver inflammation (very rare)

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly necessary — consult a doctor

  • Use with caution in individuals with weak immunity (due to disease or medicines)

  • Inform your doctor if you have chronic liver disease before vaccination

  • Ensure proper cold chain storage (2°C–8°C) for effectiveness

Drug Interactions

  • Can be administered alongside other vaccines, but at different injection sites

  • Inform your doctor if you are taking immunosuppressive drugs (may reduce vaccine effectiveness)

Storage/Disposal

  • Store between 2°C and 8°C in a refrigerator

  • Do not freeze

  • Protect from light

  • Dispose of used syringe safely as per medical waste protocols

Quick Tips

  • Ensure completion of both doses (initial + booster) for long-lasting protection

  • Report any severe allergic reaction immediately

  • If you have a fever, delay vaccination until recovery

  • Safe for children above 18 months

Doctor’s Review

“Hepatitis A is preventable through timely vaccination. Avaxim is a reliable vaccine that provides long-lasting protection, especially for children and individuals traveling to high-risk areas. The benefits of vaccination far outweigh the mild, temporary side effects.”
