Introduction
Dianorm 500mg is an oral medicine widely prescribed in Pakistan for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is recommended when lifestyle changes like diet and exercise alone are not enough to keep blood sugar under control. By helping the body use insulin more effectively and reducing sugar production in the liver, Dianorm lowers blood glucose and reduces the risk of long-term complications such as heart disease, kidney damage, and nerve problems.

Composition
Each tablet contains Metformin Hydrochloride 500mg, a member of the biguanide class of medicines.

Uses
Doctors prescribe Dianorm for:

• Type 2 diabetes (as single therapy or with other oral medicines such as sulfonylureas)

• Overweight patients with type 2 diabetes who also benefit from modest weight reduction

• As an add-on in insulin-dependent diabetes, particularly in obese patients, under medical supervision

How to Take
Dianorm is taken by mouth with water, usually once or twice daily with meals to reduce stomach upset. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed. Doses are adjusted according to blood sugar levels and the doctor’s advice.

Precautions

• Not suitable for patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

• Use cautiously in patients with kidney or liver problems, or in those recovering from severe illness.

• Should be stopped temporarily before major surgery or medical scans involving contrast dye.

• Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while taking this medicine, as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis.

• Pregnant or breastfeeding women should only use it if recommended by their physician.

Possible Side Effects
Most patients tolerate Metformin well, but some may experience stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, or a metallic taste. Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 absorption and rarely lead to anemia. Very rarely, a serious condition called lactic acidosis can occur — symptoms include muscle pain, shortness of breath, and unusual tiredness, and require urgent medical care.
