Introduction
Distol 50mg combines Diclofenac Sodium (a strong anti-inflammatory pain reliever) with Misoprostol (a protective agent for the stomach). This combination is commonly prescribed in Pakistan for patients with arthritis and other long-term painful joint conditions, where regular NSAID use may otherwise increase the risk of ulcers or stomach bleeding.
Composition
Each tablet contains:
-
Diclofenac Sodium 50mg – a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces pain, swelling, and stiffness.
-
Misoprostol 200mcg – a prostaglandin analogue that protects the stomach lining and lowers the risk of ulcers caused by NSAIDs.
Uses
Doctors prescribe Distol for:
-
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
-
Ankylosing spondylitis (arthritis affecting the spine)
-
Chronic musculoskeletal pain needing long-term NSAID therapy
-
Patients at risk of developing stomach ulcers while using pain-relief medicines
How to Take
-
Tablets are taken orally with food or milk to reduce stomach irritation.
-
The usual adult dose is one tablet twice daily, but dosing depends on the patient’s condition and doctor’s advice.
-
Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Precautions
-
Not suitable for pregnant women, especially in the later stages, as misoprostol can affect the uterus.
-
Avoid use in patients with active stomach ulcers, bleeding disorders, severe kidney or liver impairment, or uncontrolled heart disease.
-
Use cautiously in patients with a history of asthma, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular disease.
-
Alcohol should be avoided as it increases the risk of stomach irritation and bleeding.
-
Long-term use requires monitoring of kidney, liver, and blood pressure.
Possible Side Effects
Some patients may experience nausea, diarrhea, headache, or abdominal discomfort. Swelling of feet (edema), dizziness, or skin rash may also occur. Rarely, serious side effects such as stomach bleeding, allergic reactions, or cardiovascular events may develop and require urgent medical care.
Doctor’s Review
Dr. Khalid Mahmood – Consultant Rheumatologist
“Distol when patients with arthritis need long-term pain relief but are at high risk of developing ulcers from NSAID therapy. Diclofenac provides effective control of pain and swelling, while misoprostol protects the stomach lining. However, careful monitoring and follow-up, since misuse or prolonged unsupervised use of this combination can lead to serious complications.”
