Description
Carbamazepine is an anticonvulsant medicine that helps stabilize overactive nerve signals in the brain. It works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels, which prevents abnormal electrical discharges and reduces the frequency and intensity of seizures. Beyond epilepsy, it is also used to manage mood disorders such as bipolar depression when other treatments like lithium are ineffective.

Doctor Insight
Carbamazepine is often preferred when both seizure control and mood stabilization are needed, but it requires careful monitoring. Response and tolerance vary widely among patients, and liver function or blood levels are usually assessed periodically to ensure safe use.
