Overview
Ferinject contains Ferric Carboxymaltose, an intravenous iron preparation used in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia (IDA). It is particularly helpful in patients who cannot tolerate or do not respond to oral iron therapy. Ferinject restores depleted iron stores in the body, thereby improving hemoglobin levels and oxygen transport. It allows for high-dose iron replacement in a single sitting, reducing the need for frequent injections compared to traditional iron preparations.
Uses
Ferinject may be prescribed for:
-
Iron deficiency anemia when oral iron supplements are not effective or suitable.
-
Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both on and off dialysis.
-
Patients with heavy menstrual bleeding or postpartum anemia.
-
Pre- and post-operative patients who require rapid iron restoration.
-
Iron deficiency related to chronic illnesses.
How to Use
-
Administered intravenously by a trained healthcare professional.
-
Can be given as a slow injection or diluted and given as an infusion.
-
Dosage is determined by patient’s weight, hemoglobin levels, and severity of iron deficiency.
-
Often administered in one or two sessions, unlike other iron therapies that require multiple smaller doses.
-
Patients are observed during infusion for any allergic or infusion-related reactions.
Side Effects
Most patients tolerate Ferinject well. Possible side effects include:
-
Headache.
-
Dizziness.
-
Nausea or vomiting.
-
Temporary increase in blood pressure.
-
Skin rash or itching.
-
Injection site discomfort.
-
Rare but serious: allergic reaction (shortness of breath, chest pain, swelling of face/lips).
Warnings & Precautions
-
Should only be used when iron deficiency anemia is confirmed by blood tests.
-
Not recommended in patients with iron overload or anemia not caused by iron deficiency.
-
Use with caution in patients with liver disease, infections, or inflammatory conditions.
-
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only receive Ferinject under strict medical advice.
-
Blood monitoring (hemoglobin, ferritin, transferrin saturation) is required before and after therapy.
Contraindications
Do not use Ferinject if you have:
-
Allergy to Ferric Carboxymaltose or related iron products.
-
Conditions associated with iron overload (e.g., hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis).
-
Anemia not due to iron deficiency.
Storage
-
Store below 30°C, protected from light.

Keep out of reach of children.
Doctor’s Review
“Ferinject is a highly effective intravenous iron therapy that allows rapid replenishment of iron stores, often in just one or two sessions. It is especially beneficial for patients with chronic kidney disease, postpartum anemia, or those unable to tolerate oral iron. Compared to older injectable forms, Ferinject has a better safety profile and improved convenience. Monitoring is still essential to ensure safe administration and avoid iron overload.”
