Description:

Permethrin cream is an antiparasitic medicine from the synthetic pyrethroid class. It works by disrupting sodium transport across the nerve cell membranes of parasites such as lice and mites. This causes paralysis and eventually kills them. It is effective against scabies (mites and eggs) and head lice infestations.

Medical Uses

Doctors prescribe Permethrin cream for:

  • Scabies (infestation of the skin by mites)

  • Head lice infections (including eggs and nits)

How to Use

  • Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected area (or whole body, depending on your doctor’s advice).

  • Leave it on for the recommended time (usually 8–14 hours) before washing off.

  • For head lice, apply to scalp and hair thoroughly.

  • Avoid contact with eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals.

  • Wash bedding, clothes, and towels after treatment to prevent reinfestation.

  • Always follow your doctor’s instructions for repeat applications, if needed.

Possible Side Effects

Some patients may notice:

  • Mild redness, rash, or itching

  • Burning or stinging at the application site

  • Numbness or tingling of the skin

These effects are usually temporary. If irritation worsens or an allergic reaction develops, stop use and contact your doctor.

Warnings & Precautions

  • Do not apply on broken, inflamed, or infected skin.

  • Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse with plenty of water.

  • Not recommended for infants under 2 months unless prescribed.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use only if advised by a doctor.

  • Use exactly as directed — do not over-apply.

Contraindications

Do not use if you:

  • Are allergic to Permethrin or any of its ingredients

  • Have severely damaged or secondarily infected skin at the site of application

Doctor’s Review

Dr. Ayesha Malik (MBBS, FCPS – Dermatologist)

Permethrin cream is the standard treatment we use for scabies and lice in Pakistan. It is usually well tolerated, but the most important thing is to apply it properly and ensure all close contacts are treated at the same time. Reinfection is very common if the household is not managed together. In most patients, mild irritation settles on its own within a short time.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature (below 25°C).

  • Protect from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Discard leftover cream safely — do not reuse opened packs after the prescribed treatment.

Quick Tips

  • Treat all close contacts and household members at the same time for scabies.

  • Wash clothes, bedding, and towels in hot water after treatment.

  • Do not use cosmetics or skin products on the treated area until therapy is completed.
