Description

Mepresor contains Metoprolol Tartrate, a beta blocker widely prescribed for the management of high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and certain heart rhythm disorders. By blocking the effects of adrenaline on the heart and blood vessels, it helps lower blood pressure, slow the heart rate, and reduce the strain on the heart.

Indications

Doctors may prescribe Mepresor for:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)

  • Angina pectoris (chest pain due to reduced blood supply to the heart)

  • Arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats)

  • Symptoms related to an overactive thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis)

How It Works

Metoprolol blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart and blood vessels. This action:

  • Slows down the heart rate

  • Lowers blood pressure

  • Reduces chest pain by lowering oxygen demand of the heart

  • Controls abnormal heart rhythms

Dosage

  • Each tablet contains Metoprolol Tartrate 100 mg

  • The dose and frequency are individualized and should be taken strictly as prescribed by the physician

Side Effects

Common: tiredness, dizziness, headache, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, shortness of breath, nausea, stomach discomfort
Rare: depression, sleep disturbances, tingling sensations, fluid retention, irregular heartbeat, skin rash, muscle cramps
Very Rare: changes in blood tests, hallucinations, vision changes, hearing problems (high doses), chest pain, worsening psoriasis, liver function changes, joint pain, sexual dysfunction

Drug Interactions

Metoprolol may interact with several medicines, including:

  • Other blood pressure or heart medicines (verapamil, diltiazem, nifedipine, amiodarone, quinidine, clonidine, hydralazine, prazosin)

  • Antidepressants (tricyclics, SSRIs)
