Description

This is a potent broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that fights bacterial infections by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. It works by binding to and inhibiting specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for building bacterial cell walls. This causes the cell wall to weaken and rupture, killing the bacteria. Meropenem is particularly effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including those producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases.

Formula

Each injection contains Meropenem 1000mg.

What It’s Used For

Pakistani doctors use this for:

  • Severe bacterial infections caused by resistant organisms
  • Abdominal, skin, and blood infections
  • Hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Ventilator-associated pneumonia
  • Broad range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacterial infections
  • Last-resort treatment for severe, life-threatening infections
  • Patients with impaired kidney function or on dialysis (with dose adjustment)

How to Use

  • Must be administered by trained medical professionals under supervision.
  • Reconstitute the powder with provided sterile water.
  • Gently swirl to dissolve completely.
  • Administer intramuscularly or intravenously as directed.
  • Give slowly over the recommended time frame.
  • Follow prescribed dosage and duration exactly.

Who Shouldn’t Use It

  • Severe allergy to Meropenem or other carbapenem antibiotics
  • History of severe allergic reactions to beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillins or cephalosporins)
  • Severe kidney disease without proper dose adjustment
  • History of seizures or conditions increasing seizure risk
  • Known MRSA infection or organisms resistant to Meropenem
  • Viral infections or non-bacterial infections
  • History of Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea or colitis

Precautions

  • Use with caution in patients with penicillin or cephalosporin allergy (potential cross-reactivity).
  • Requires dose adjustments for kidney impairment.
  • Prolonged use may cause superinfection, including C. difficile diarrhea.
  • May cause seizures, especially in patients with neurological disorders or kidney problems.
  • Monitor intravenous administration closely to avoid infusion reactions.
  • Regular kidney and liver function tests needed during prolonged therapy.
  • Elderly patients more susceptible to side effects.
  • Don’t mix with other IV medications unless compatibility confirmed.
  • Complete full course to prevent bacterial resistance.
  • Inform doctor about any allergies or kidney/liver issues before starting.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Consult your doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Possible Side Effects

Common:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Skin rashes or itching

  • Dizziness
  • Injection site reactions (pain, swelling, redness)

Serious (rare):

  • Seizures
  • Allergic reactions (hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face or throat)

Overdose Signs

Severe gastrointestinal symptoms (intense nausea, persistent vomiting, abdominal discomfort), neurological issues (dizziness, confusion, or seizures). Seek immediate medical help.

Missed Dose

Administer as soon as possible. If next dose is near, skip the missed one. Don’t double up. Contact healthcare provider if multiple doses missed.
