Description

Qbal IM/IV Injection contains Mecobalamin (500mcg), an active form of Vitamin B12 used for treating anaemia and peripheral neuropathies. Unlike cyanocobalamin, Mecobalamin is more effectively transported to nerve cells and plays a vital role in cell regeneration and the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. It is highly beneficial in conditions like peripheral neuropathy and megaloblastic anaemia due to Vitamin B12 deficiency.

How It Works

Mecobalamin acts as a coenzyme in the synthesis of methionine from homocysteine, contributing to DNA synthesis and protein production. It enhances the nerve cell regeneration, especially in cases of neuropathies and plays a significant role in promoting axonal transport in nerve cells.

Indications

Qbal IM/IV Injection is indicated for the treatment of:

  1. Peripheral Neuropathies: Nerve damage causing symptoms like pain, numbness, and weakness.

  2. Megaloblastic Anaemia: Caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Dosage

  • Usual Dose: 500mcg administered via IM (intramuscular) or IV (intravenous) injection, typically once daily or as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  • Administration: To be administered by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects

Mecobalamin is generally well tolerated. However, some potential side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, anorexia, diarrhea)

  • Skin rash

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Electrolyte imbalances (in rare cases)

If you experience any severe side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

Mecobalamin may interact with:

  • Neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, H2-blockers, colchicine, oral contraceptives, parenteral chloramphenicol.

Always inform your doctor of any other medications or supplements you are taking.

When Not to Use

Qbal IM/IV Injection is contraindicated in patients who are:

  • Allergic to Mecobalamin or any components of this product.

  • Have a history of Leber’s disease or optic nerve damage.

  • Have iron or folic acid deficiencies.

Precautions

  • Leber’s Disease: Mecobalamin should not be used in Leber’s disease due to the potential to worsen optic nerve damage.

  • B12 Deficiency: If no clinical response is observed, Mecobalamin should not be used for prolonged periods in patients with Vitamin B12 deficiency or peripheral neuropathies.

  • Iron/Folic Acid Deficiency: Consult your doctor if you have iron or folic acid deficiency, as these can affect the treatment.

Warnings

  1. Pregnancy: Consult your doctor before using Qbal IM/IV Injection during pregnancy.

  2. Elderly: Use with caution in elderly patients.

Doctor’s Review

Dr. Asim Qureshi, MD, Neurologist:
“Qbal IM/IV Injection 500mcg (Mecobalamin) is an essential treatment for peripheral neuropathy and megaloblastic anaemia caused by Vitamin B12 deficiency. Mecobalamin is more effective than cyanocobalamin in treating nerve degeneration, as it is more readily absorbed by nerve cells. It plays a crucial role in nerve regeneration and repair, providing significant relief from symptoms related to neuropathies. However, it must be used under medical supervision, particularly in patients with pre-existing heart or kidney conditions.”
