Indications
It is used for parkinsonism (a group of disorders causing difficulty in movement such as tremors, stiffness, slow movements) such as those seen with Parkinson’s disease
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with severe psychosis (loss of touch with reality), history of malignant melanoma (skin cancer), narrow angle glaucoma (pressure in the eye, causing visual disturbances)
Side effects
Patient prescribed with this may experience cardiac (heart), CNS(brain) disturbances, GI upset, anorexia, BP change, psychiatric disorders, dystonia (uncontrolled muscle contraction), anemia, alopecia(hair loss), skin reactions, peripheral edema(puffiness), dry mouth, dyspnea(difficulty in breathing), aspiration pneumonia (entry of food or fluid into the lung causing pneumonia), urinary retention and incontinence(difficulty in urinating and holding it in), neck pain, vitB6/B12 deficiency.
Precautions
Patients should be cautious if they have a history of cardiovascular(heart), hepatic (liver), renal (kidney), pulmonary (lung) or endocrine(hormonal) disease, recent MI (heart attack). History of psychosis (loss of touch with reality). Monitor for mental changes, depression and suicidal ideation (wanting to suicide).
Pregnancy
Pregnant females should consult their doctors before using this medicine.
Lactation
This medication is contraindicated in lactating females. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
