Description
Suprox 500mg Tablet contains Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is widely used in Pakistan for the treatment of bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, sinusitis, gastrointestinal infections, and certain genital tract infections. It works by blocking bacterial DNA replication and repair, leading to bacterial death.
How it Works

Inhibits DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, both essential for bacterial DNA replication.

Effective against Gram-negative organisms, with some activity against Gram-positive and anaerobes.
Primary Uses / Indications
Suprox (Ciprofloxacin) is indicated for:

Lower respiratory tract infections.

Acute exacerbations of chronic sinusitis.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Genital tract infections (e.g. prostatitis, some STIs).
Dosage

Active Ingredient: Ciprofloxacin HCl 500mg per tablet.

Dose depends on infection site, severity, and patient profile.

Take with a full glass of water.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:

Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence.

Neurological: dizziness, headache, agitation, sleep disturbances.

Skin reactions: rash, itching, photosensitivity.

Musculoskeletal: joint/muscle pain.
-
Liver/kidney: elevated enzymes, rare hepatic failure.

Others: fever, renal impairment, allergic reactions.
Drug Interactions
Ciprofloxacin may interact with:

Theophylline, Clozapine, Ropinirole, Tizanidine (contraindicated).

Chelating agents (calcium, magnesium, iron, aluminum).

Warfarin, Methotrexate, Cyclosporin, Omeprazole, Sildenafil.

Phenytoin, Glyburide/Glibenclamide.

Caffeine, Pentoxifylline.
When Not to Use
Do not use if:

Allergic to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.

Taking Tizanidine.
-
History of severe allergic reactions to antibiotics in this class.
Precautions

Stop treatment if signs of liver injury (jaundice, dark urine, abdominal pain) occur.

Use cautiously in liver, kidney, or CNS disorders.

Not suitable for patients with myasthenia gravis.
Warnings

Hypersensitivity: severe allergic reactions may occur even after a single dose.

Neuropathy: discontinue if tingling, numbness, or weakness develops.

G6PD deficiency: risk of hemolysis (red blood cell breakdown).
Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Avoid unless absolutely necessary.

Lactation: Not recommended; consult doctor.
