Description

Uriben Suspension contains Nalidixic Acid, an antibacterial agent from the quinolone class, primarily used for urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by blocking bacterial enzymes such as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, preventing bacterial DNA replication and leading to bacterial death.

Nalidixic Acid is typically used when first-line antibiotics for UTIs are unsuitable or ineffective. It is considered more useful in uncomplicated urinary infections, but dosing must be carefully monitored due to higher chances of side effects compared to newer antibiotics.

Uses

• Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) caused by susceptible bacteria.

• May be used in certain GI infections under medical supervision.

Dosage

Adults (UTI – Acute): 1 g four times daily for at least 7 days.
Adults (Chronic): 500 mg four times daily.
Children (3 months to 12 years): 12.5 mg/kg four times daily for 7 days.
Not recommended for infants below 3 months.

How to Take

Shake well before each dose. Measure accurately using a proper spoon or syringe. Can be taken with water; avoid taking with milk or calcium-rich foods.

Missed Dose

Take when remembered unless close to the next dose. Do not double.

Side Effects

May include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, visual changes, skin rash, photosensitivity, or rarely convulsions and intracranial pressure increase. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms appear.

Precautions

Use cautiously in patients with seizure disorders, liver or kidney impairment, or known CNS conditions. Avoid sun exposure or use protective measures due to risk of photosensitivity.

Contraindications

Not suitable for individuals with known allergy to Nalidixic Acid or related quinolones, or infants below 3 months.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from heat and light. Keep tightly closed and out of children’s reach.
