Description

Dexlansoprazole is a next-generation proton pump inhibitor (PPI) designed to reduce stomach acid more effectively and for a longer duration than conventional PPIs like omeprazole or pantoprazole. It works by blocking the action of the gastric proton pump (H⁺/K⁺-ATPase), preventing acid secretion at its source. This helps relieve symptoms like heartburn, acidity, chest burning, and ulcer-related discomfort.

Primary Uses

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

  • Peptic or Duodenal Ulcers.

  • Heartburn, indigestion, and acid regurgitation.

  • Ulcers caused by NSAIDs or H. pylori (when combined with antibiotics).

Indications

Doctors commonly recommend Dexlansoprazole for:

  • Persistent acidity not relieved by regular antacids.

  • Night-time heartburn or chronic acid reflux.

  • Healing and maintenance of erosive esophagitis.

  • Prevention of ulcer recurrence.

How It Works

Dexlansoprazole inhibits the final step of acid production inside the stomach by binding to gastric proton pumps. This suppresses both fasting and meal-induced acid secretion, providing 24-hour relief with once-daily use.

Side Effects

Common:

  • Headache.

  • Diarrhea or constipation.

  • Nausea.

  • Dry mouth.

Less Common:

  • Upper respiratory infections.

  • Fatigue.

  • Abdominal discomfort.

Seek medical attention if you notice persistent stomach pain, blood in stool, or severe dizziness.

Warnings

  • Long-term use may reduce vitamin B12 or magnesium levels.

  • Use cautiously in osteoporosis patients due to rare fracture risk.

  • Avoid prolonged use without medical supervision.

Contraindications

Do not use in individuals with:

  • Known allergy to Dexlansoprazole or other PPIs.

  • Severe liver impairment.

  • Concurrent methotrexate (high dose) or nelfinavir therapy.

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, bone weakness, or autoimmune disorders.

  • Long-term users may require periodic lab monitoring (Vitamin B12, bone health, kidney function).

Drug Interactions

  • Warfarin, Clopidogrel, Methotrexate – may alter their effects.

  • Antifungal agents & antibiotics – absorption may be affected.

  • Iron or calcium supplements – reduced absorption due to higher stomach. pH.

Food Interactions

  • Can be taken with or without food, although better absorbed on an empty stomach.

  • Avoid taking with antacids within 30 minutes, as they may reduce effectiveness.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture. Keep tightly closed and out of children’s reach.

Doctor’s Review

Dr. Ayesha Siddiqui (Gastroenterologist):
“Dexlansoprazole is excellent for patients with persistent acid reflux, especially those who experience night-time burning or breakthrough symptoms despite standard PPIs. It provides longer coverage due to its dual delayed-release mechanism. However, it should be used responsibly and monitored during long-term use.”
