Description
Zolrest contains Linezolid, an advanced synthetic antibiotic commonly reserved for serious bacterial infections. It acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, blocking the initiation phase of protein synthesis, which stops bacterial growth. It is particularly useful against Gram-positive bacteria, including those resistant to common antibiotics such as MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and VRE (Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci).
Primary Uses / Indications
Zolrest is used for the treatment of:
-
Hospital-acquired and community-acquired pneumonia.
-
Complicated and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections.
-
MRSA and VRE-related infections.
-
Drug-resistant bacterial infections where other antibiotics have failed.
How to Use
-
Swallow the tablet whole with water.
-
Can be taken with or without food, ideally at the same time each day.
-
Follow the prescribed duration strictly — do not stop early, even if symptoms improve.
Side Effects
Commonly reported:
-
Headache, insomnia, dizziness.
-
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort.
-
Altered taste, tongue discoloration.
-
Skin rash or itching.
Hematological effects:
-
Anemia, thrombocytopenia, low white blood cell count (monitor CBC in prolonged use).
Rare but serious:
-
Lactic acidosis, serotonin syndrome (if taken with interacting drugs).
When Not to Use
Avoid if:
-
You have known allergy to Linezolid.
-
You are currently on MAO inhibitors (used for depression or Parkinson’s).
Precautions & Warnings
-
Blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate should be monitored if combined with adrenergic agents (like pseudoephedrine).
-
Platelet levels should be monitored, especially in patients at risk of bleeding.
-
Long use may alter gut flora, increasing chances of Clostridium difficile-associated colitis (severe diarrhea).
-
No major age-related dosing differences, but elderly patients should still be monitored closely.
Drug Interactions
Avoid or use cautiously with:
-
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
-
Adrenergic agents (e.g., phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine).
-
Serotonergic antidepressants — may increase risk of serotonin syndrome.
Doctor’s Overview
Dr. Hamid Raza (Infectious Diseases Specialist):
“Linezolid is a reserve antibiotic — highly effective for stubborn Gram-positive infections, especially MRSA or VRE. Duration and blood count monitoring are key, especially for long-term courses.”
Storage
-
Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.
-
Keep in original blister pack, out of children’s reach.
