Foxamine contains rifaximin, an antibiotic that mainly works inside the gut. It is used for bacterial traveler’s diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, and for reducing episodes of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease. By stopping bacteria from multiplying, it helps control symptoms linked to gut-related infections and toxin buildup.
Primary Uses
-
Traveler’s diarrhea caused by bacteria
-
Irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea
-
Prevention of hepatic encephalopathy
Indications
Doctors may prescribe Foxamine for sudden diarrhea caused by bacterial infection, for chronic gut symptoms linked to IBS-D, and for patients with liver disease to lower toxin levels that affect brain function.
Side Effects
Some patients may feel nausea, stomach pain, bloating, headache, dizziness, or weakness. In rare cases, skin rash or allergic reaction may occur.
Warnings
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should only use it if prescribed by a doctor. Patients with liver disease may need dose adjustments. Some people may feel dizzy, so avoid driving if this happens. Alcohol should be avoided, especially in liver patients.
Precautions
Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to rifaximin or related antibiotics. Tell your doctor if you have severe liver problems. Stop the medicine and seek medical advice if diarrhea worsens or allergic symptoms appear. Avoid taking it without proper medical diagnosis.
Contraindications
Not to be used in people with allergy to rifaximin or in cases of severe intestinal obstruction.
Doctor’s Review
Dr. Kamran Ali – Consultant Gastroenterologist
“Rifaximin is used for traveler’s diarrhea and IBS-D, acting locally in the intestine with minimal absorption for safe and effective results. It also plays a role in preventing complications like hepatic encephalopathy in liver disease. Generally well tolerated, it should always be used under medical guidance.”
How to Use
Take the tablet orally, with or without food. Normally, it is taken three times daily, but always follow your doctor’s directions. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not stop the course early without consulting your doctor.
