Description
Cefixime is an antibiotic that kills the germs making you sick. It’s from a group called cephalosporins. Doctors give it when you have infections in your throat, ears, chest, or when you pee. Some people get it for typhoid too.
This stuff only works on germs, not viruses. So if you have a cold or flu, it won’t do anything. Don’t bug your doctor for antibiotics when you just have a virus. Taking them when you don’t need them makes them stop working later when you really do need them.
Formula / Composition
- What’s in it: Cefixime
- What kind: Cephalosporin antibiotic (germ killer)
- How it comes: Pills, capsules, liquid for kids
Uses:
Doctors give Cefixime when you have:
- Sore throat or swollen tonsils from germs
- Ear infection that hurts bad
- Chest infection, pneumonia, or bad cough with gunk
- Infection when you pee (UTI)
- Typhoid fever (sometimes)
- Other germ infections your doctor thinks this will fix
Precautions
Only take this if your doctor said to. Don’t just take leftover antibiotics from last time. Be careful if your kidneys don’t work right or you’re allergic to lots of stuff.
You have to take every single pill even if you feel better. If you stop early, the germs come back stronger. Taking this for a long time can give you yeast infections in your mouth or private parts.
Don’t give your pills to other people even if they’re sick with the same thing.
Possible Side Effects
Some people get:
- Stomach feels gross, want to throw up, or get the runs
- Head hurts or feel dizzy
- Skin gets itchy or bumpy
- Belly hurts a little
Bad stuff that doesn’t happen much:
- Really bad diarrhea with blood or slimy stuff
- Itchy or weird discharge down there
- White fuzzy stuff on your tongue or sores in your mouth
- Fever, chills, or bleeding when you shouldn’t
Go to the doctor right away if your face swells up, your lips get big, or you can’t breathe right.
When Not to Use
Don’t take this if:
- You’re allergic to antibiotics like this or penicillin
- Your kidneys are really messed up (unless your doctor changes how much you take)
- You had bad reactions to antibiotics before
How to Use
Swallow it with water. You can eat food with it or not, but eating might help if your stomach gets upset. Don’t break pills up or chew them.
If you have the liquid kind, shake the bottle good before you pour it. Use the little cup or spoon that came with it to measure right.
Take it the same time every day. Do exactly what your doctor wrote down.
Storage & Disposal
Keep pills and capsules at normal temperature, not hot or wet places. Keep liquid medicine closed tight and shake it before you use it.
Throw away old medicine. Don’t use it after the date on the bottle. Hide it from kids.
Doctor’s Overview — Dr. Farah Nadeem, MBBS, FCPS (Medicine)
Cefixime is often used for throat infections, urinary tract infections, and sometimes typhoid when other antibiotics are not effective. It is generally well tolerated, though some patients may experience stomach upset or diarrhea. Completing the full course is important to prevent the infection from returning or becoming resistant. Severe diarrhea, rash, or signs of allergy should be reported to a doctor immediately. When taken as directed, Cefixime is usually safe and effective.
