Polymalt-F Tablets are a combination of Iron Hydroxide Polymaltose Complex and Folic Acid, formulated to prevent and treat iron deficiency and folate-related anemia. The complex form ensures better absorption and reduced gastric irritation compared to traditional iron salts, while folic acid supports red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis, promoting healthy blood production, especially during pregnancy and lactation.
Primary Uses
-
Treatment of latent and manifest iron deficiency.
-
Prevention of anemia during pregnancy, lactation, or post-partum recovery.
-
Supportive therapy for nutritional deficiency or chronic blood loss.
-
Restores hemoglobin levels and improves fatigue and weakness.
Indications
Indicated for:
-
Iron and folic acid deficiency states.
-
Prophylactic therapy before, during, and after pregnancy.
-
Anemia due to nutritional deficiency or chronic illness.
How It Works
Iron Hydroxide Polymaltose Complex provides iron in its ferric (Fe³⁺) form, which binds to transferrin and ferritin for transport and storage. It is converted to the ferrous (Fe²⁺) form within bone marrow cells to support hemoglobin synthesis. Folic acid is a precursor of tetrahydrofolic acid, essential for nucleic acid production and normal erythropoiesis (red blood cell formation).
Dosage
As directed by the physician. Typically, one tablet daily after meals or as prescribed. Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Side Effects
Generally well-tolerated. Occasional effects may include:
-
Gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, or constipation.
-
Epigastric pain or diarrhea.
-
Dark stools (harmless and clinically insignificant).
-
No tooth staining observed.
Drug Interactions
-
Phenytoin: May reduce folate absorption.
-
Sulfasalazine: May interfere with folic acid metabolism.
Note: Complex-bound iron minimizes food and drug interactions with tetracyclines, antacids, or dietary inhibitors (phytates, oxalates, tannins).
Warnings & Precautions
Pregnancy & Lactation: Use only when clearly required and under medical supervision.
Overdosage: May cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, metabolic acidosis, or convulsions. Immediate medical care required.
Anemia due to infection or malignancy: Iron may accumulate in reticuloendothelial cells and should only be used once the underlying cause is addressed.
Contraindications
Do not use in:
-
Hypersensitivity to iron or any component.
-
Iron overload disorders (hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis).
-
Anemia not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., hemolytic or B12-deficiency anemia).
-
Repeated blood transfusions or iron-utilization disorders (thalassemia, sideroachrestic anemia).
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from direct light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
