Clinical Pharmacology
-
Sulphacetamide sodium acts as a bacteriostatic agent against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms by interfering with folic acid synthesis, which bacteria need for growth.
-
Prednisolone acetate is a glucocorticoid that reduces inflammation and treats allergic reactions, especially in conditions like blepharitis.
-
Phenylephrine HCl is an alpha-sympathomimetic agent that causes vasoconstriction, helping to reduce swelling and redness in the eye by constricting the engorged blood vessels.
Indications
Predmide-P/Predmide is indicated for:
-
Treatment of nonpurulent blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis (seborrheal, staphylococcal, allergic).
-
Treatment of nonpurulent conjunctivitis (allergic and bacterial).
Contraindications
Predmide-P/Predmide should not be used in:
-
Acute herpes simplex (dendritic keratitis) infections.
-
Purulent untreated infections.
-
Vaccinia, varicella, and most other viral diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva.
-
Ocular tuberculosis.
-
Fungal diseases of the eye.
-
Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication.
Adverse Reactions and Precautions
-
Infections: In conditions caused by microorganisms, infection may be masked, enhanced, or activated by the steroid component.
-
Intraocular Pressure: Extended use may lead to an increase in intraocular pressure in susceptible individuals. Frequent monitoring of intraocular pressure is recommended.
-
Corneal and Scleral Thinning: Long-term use of topical corticosteroids, including in patients with thin corneal or scleral tissue, may increase the risk of perforation.
-
Caution in Sulfonamide Sensitivity: Use with caution in patients with a known or suspected sensitivity to sulfonamides.
