Description

Sionex-BD Tablets contain Cefadroxil, a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria through inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the destruction of susceptible bacteria. It is commonly prescribed for respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and bone infections.

Generics

  • Cefadroxil (500mg)

Requires Prescription

  • Yes

Drug Class

  • Cephalosporin Antibiotic

Dosage Form

  • Tablet

Used For

  • Treatment of bacterial infections

How It Works

  • Cefadroxil binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacteria, blocking the cross-linking of peptidoglycan in the cell wall.

  • This weakens the bacterial structure, causing rupture and death.

  • May result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms if used for prolonged periods.

Indications

Cefadroxil is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate infections caused by susceptible organisms, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis)

  • Urinary tract infections

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Bone infections

  • Alternative to penicillin in patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin (non-severe cases)

Dosage

  • Typical adult dose: 500mg to 1g once or twice daily, depending on severity and site of infection.

  • Pediatric doses should be based on body weight and as prescribed by a doctor.

  • Duration of therapy depends on infection type but should be continued for the full prescribed course.

Side Effects

Common:

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Skin rashes, itching

Less Common:

  • Vaginal yeast infections, genital itching

  • Abdominal pain, fever

Rare/Serious:

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis, angioedema)

  • Erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis

  • Renal dysfunction, toxic nephropathy

  • Hepatic dysfunction including cholestasis

  • Blood disorders (aplastic anemia, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia)

  • Seizures in patients with kidney impairment

When Not to Use

  • Known allergy to Cefadroxil or other cephalosporins

Precautions

  • Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required).

  • Patients with history of penicillin allergy may also be at risk (cross-sensitivity).

  • Long-term use may cause superinfection with resistant bacteria or fungi.

Warnings

  1. Always check for hypersensitivity before initiating therapy.

  2. Prolonged use may promote resistant bacterial overgrowth.

  3. If superinfection occurs, discontinue or adjust treatment appropriately.

Drug Interactions

  • Loop diuretics (may increase risk of nephrotoxicity)

  • Anticoagulants (enhanced bleeding risk)

  • Other antibiotics (possible reduced effectiveness)

  • Antiplatelets (increased bleeding risk)

  • Colestyramine (may reduce absorption of cefadroxil)

Additional Information

  • Pregnancy Category: Consult your physician before use.

  • Lactation: May pass into breast milk; use with caution.

Doctor’s Review

Dr. Ayesha Malik – Consultant Infectious Diseases Specialist
“Cefadroxil is a reliable first-generation cephalosporin used for common respiratory, urinary, and skin infections. It is usually well tolerated, but careful monitoring is necessary in patients with kidney issues. As with all antibiotics, completing the full prescribed course is essential to avoid resistance.”
