Description

Azithromycin 250mg works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria and blocking protein synthesis, which stops bacterial growth and replication. Thanks to its long half-life, it stays active in body tissues for extended periods — allowing once-daily dosing and short treatment courses while still delivering broad-spectrum antibacterial action.

Primary Uses

Azithromycin 250mg Capsules are commonly used in Pakistan for managing:

  • Respiratory tract infections – pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis.

  • Throat and ear infections – pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections – acne, folliculitis.

  • Sexually transmitted infections – chlamydia, gonorrhea (specific dosing required).

  • Gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria.

Indications

Doctors commonly prescribe Azithromycin for:

  • Bacterial infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract.

  • Skin and soft tissue infections.

  • Ear, nose, and throat infections.

  • Uncomplicated genital infections due to Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

How It Works

Azithromycin blocks bacterial protein synthesis, preventing bacteria from reproducing. It does not instantly kill all bacteria but halts their growth, allowing the immune system to clear the infection effectively.

Dosage (General Reference Only — Follow Doctor’s Advice)

Condition Typical Adult Dose
Respiratory / Throat / Ear Infections 500 mg on Day 1, then 250 mg daily for 4 days
Skin Infections 500 mg once daily for 3 days

Doctor’s Overview

Dr. Farhan Qureshi (Infectious Disease Specialist):
“Azithromycin is widely prescribed in Pakistan due to its convenient once-daily dosing and broad antibacterial coverage. It is highly effective for respiratory and throat infections when used appropriately. However, self-medication must be avoided due to rising antibiotic resistance.”
